The report of the 2020 Research into Practice Award winner. The project investigated how to undertake higher yield steel reinforcement and its implementation at HS2's Old Oak Station.

The most commonly specified characteristic yield strength of steel reinforcement is 500MPa. However, publicly available research suggests that the characteristic yield strength of much of the reinforcement in the UK exceeds 500MPa. The study authored by Ailsa Roberts reviews material testing data for steel reinforcement recently supplied to the UK to prove the feasibility of adopting a higher yield strength for the design of reinforced concrete elements.
