John Barrett Prize 2020 winners
The John Barrett Prize is awarded to the overall winner of the Young Structural Engineers International Design Competition (YSEIDC). The 2020 brief was to design a sustainable habitat for coastal communities from Least Developed Countries who face the prospect of rising sea levels due to climate change. Design considerations included housing, work areas, places of assembly, drainage and sanitation. These challenges reflect the issues faced by governments and NGOs across the world.
The John Barrett Prize 2020 is awarded to Gian Karlo Cabanas and Suista Gurung, for their proposal on the use of bamboo to build sustainable, disaster-proof social housing in Bangladesh. The winning team are joined by Shalini Jagnarine-Azan and Tom Newby from the YSEIDC judging panel, to discuss the context of the winning entry and its importance to disaster relief.
The John Barrett Prize was established by Ann Barrett to honour the life and work of her late husband John - a member of the Institution who was keen to develop design skills in young engineers.
